Male deer shed their antlers every year to start growing a bigger one just a couple of months later. We give you king of the woods without his rack.
Close up of the antler sockets. Kinda gross looking but trust me, it does not hurt him at all. Give it a couple of months and we can see the new ones coming. This year it should be 7-8 ends.
Further down:
World, let me introduce you to... PVC, yes, that is her name. And we only hope she is a girl. It's really hard to tell when they were just born and hide underneath the house where you can't get to see any details or take pictures.
The good news is: If she made it through the first days, chances are good she will make it all the way.
We will post her start into life and more pictures on our facebook page. Click the like button to follow her story on Facebook.
Lands End is one of the few sanctuarys for island deer on the west end of Roatan. Years back many locals used to live from hunting and fishing, deer being their favorite game.
Yes, they are native to the island. Actually they have been brought here from the Honduran coast by (scottish) settlers some 100 years ago. Roatan island deer are 'white tails' but way smaller than their north american family and in fact very very pretty.
Currently 4 little deer live on the premises of Lands End. Each one of them has their own character and personality. Happy little deer will lick your skin because they like the salt, then again, some even lick you right after you had a shower so.... can't be the salt really.
There is no way they bite you. They hate meat. They even hate eggs or anything that touched eggs.
We feed them dry food (pellets), vegetables and bread. You can feed our deer in the garden or on the beach.
They love: Bread, Potatoes, Avocado, Melon, Cantaloupe, Lettuce, Broccoli, Carrots, Flowers, Peppers, Apples, Cookies, etc. and always prefer vegetables over fruit.
Due to increasing human population, development and construction, island deer have lost much of their habitat. You can still find them in the east end of Roatan, the island of Barbaretta and also in areas with low density housing where the population is predominantly foreigners - the hills between Westend and West Bay.
Please do not try to pet them. Respect their own choice to come close or stay off. Avoid rapid movments. Bold deer will eat from your hand, shy deer will stand and sniff from a few steps distance. They are no hygenic threat to you but it is good habit to wash your hands after contact (that's what you do after petting a dog too, right?).
